In 1974, when I was appointed to teach Bibliography at Birmingham, I put together a complete hand printing press, known as The Flat Earth Press. What memories return... There is a brief account of this in one of my lectures.

We print on a small Imperial, a sweet and well-behaved machine of 1839. Initially Bibliography students and I ran it as a jobbing press, printing cards, pamphlets, posters, and other small items. It is now used every year by the first year bibliographers for printing Christmas cards. This is very character forming.
